How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn OFF the circuit breaker to the disposal. Do not leave a self-running disposal powered.
- Step 1 – Verify switch position: Ensure the wall switch or air switch button is in the OFF position. If the unit still runs, leave the breaker OFF.
- Step 2 – Inspect wall switch: Remove the switch cover (breaker OFF). Check for signs of burning or melted plastic. Replace the switch if damaged.
- Step 3 – Check wiring: Confirm that the disposal is wired through the switch, not directly to constant hot. Correct any miswiring according to local codes.
- Step 4 – Test air switch module: If using an air switch, unplug the module from the outlet. If the disposal stops, replace the air switch module.
- Step 5 – Internal relay issue: If wiring and switches are correct but the disposal runs whenever power is applied, the internal control relay is stuck. Replace the disposal unit.
