Possible Causes
Unplugged power cord, Tripped GFCI outlet, Tripped circuit breaker, Faulty wall switch or air switch, Loose wiring in junction box
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Before touching wiring, turn OFF the circuit breaker. Never work on live circuits.
- Step 1 – Check power cord: Look under the sink and verify the Waste King disposal is firmly plugged into the outlet. If it is loose, plug it in fully and test.
- Step 2 – Reset GFCI: If the outlet is a GFCI type, press the RESET button. If it will not reset, unplug the disposal and try again. If it resets without the disposal but trips with it plugged in, the disposal or cord may be shorted.
- Step 3 – Check breaker: Inspect your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. Reset it fully OFF then ON.
- Step 4 – Test wall switch: Try turning the switch on and off while listening for any click or hum. If nothing happens and you have a voltage tester, verify power is leaving the switch (power OFF before removing the cover).
- Step 5 – Inspect junction box: For hardwired units, remove the junction box cover under the sink (power OFF). Tighten any loose wire nuts and ensure the cable clamp is secure.
- Step 6 – If still dead: If power is confirmed at the outlet/switch but the disposal remains dead, the internal overload, motor, or control is likely failed and the unit should be replaced.
