Possible Causes
Installer forgot to remove internal knockout plug, Partial removal leaving plastic obstruction, Dishwasher hose connected below waterline without air gap
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power to the disposal and unplug the dishwasher.
- Step 1 – Disconnect dishwasher hose: Loosen the clamp and remove the hose from the dishwasher inlet on the disposal.
- Step 2 – Check for knockout plug: Shine a flashlight into the inlet. If you see a solid plastic wall, the knockout plug is still in place.
- Step 3 – Remove plug: Insert a screwdriver into the inlet and tap gently with a hammer to knock the plug into the disposal chamber. Retrieve the plug from inside the chamber with tongs.
- Step 4 – Reconnect hose: Reattach the dishwasher hose with a secure clamp and ensure a proper high loop or air gap.
- Step 5 – Test dishwasher drain: Run a short dishwasher cycle and verify proper draining.
