Waste Maid Organic Buildup in Grinding Chamber and Splash Guard

Garbage disposal emits a persistent bad odor even after running with water

Possible Causes

Food residue trapped under splash guard, Grease buildup on grind ring, Sludge in discharge elbow, Insufficient flushing with water after use

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal at the switch. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners in a Waste Maid disposal.

  • Clean the splash guard: If the rubber splash guard (sink baffle) is removable, pull it out and scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush. If non-removable, scrub in place with a long-handled brush.
  • Brush the grinding chamber: Use a disposal-safe brush to scrub the inside walls and grind ring while running a small stream of warm water (disposal OFF).
  • Deodorize naturally: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the disposal, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Let it foam for 5–10 minutes, then flush with hot water.
  • Ice and citrus cleaning: Fill the chamber with a handful of ice cubes and a few small lemon or orange peels. Run cold water and briefly operate the disposal to help scour the grind ring.
  • Prevent recurrence: Always run cold water for 15–30 seconds after grinding to flush debris through the Waste Maid discharge.
