Garbage disposal hums when switched ON but the grinding plate does not spin

Possible Causes
Foreign object jammed between turntable and grind ring, Jammed impeller lugs, Seized motor shaft, Worn or damaged bearings in Waste Maid motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and shut OFF the circuit breaker. Never put your hand inside the disposal while it is connected to power.
- Use the supplied jam-buster wrench: On the bottom of most Waste Maid disposals there is a hex socket in the center of the motor shaft. Insert the Waste Maid jam-buster (Allen) wrench and rotate back and forth to free the jam.
- Remove foreign objects: With power OFF, use tongs or pliers from the sink opening to remove bones, utensils, or other debris. Do not use your fingers.
- Manually rotate the turntable: After loosening with the wrench, use a wooden spoon handle from the top to gently push the impeller lugs and confirm the plate spins freely.
- Reset and test: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit, restore power at the breaker, then briefly turn ON the switch to test.
- If still humming and locked: The motor shaft or bearings may be seized. At this point, replacement of the disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
