Possible Causes

Overheating motor due to jammed impellers, Overloading with fibrous or hard food waste, Failing motor windings, Low voltage or poor electrical connection causing overheating

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and circuit breaker before working on the unit.

  • Clear any jams: Use the bottom hex socket with the Waste Maid jam-buster wrench to rotate the motor shaft back and forth. Remove any foreign objects from the grinding chamber with pliers.
  • Reduce load: Avoid feeding large quantities of food at once. Run cold water and feed small amounts gradually.
  • Check for overheating: If the housing feels very hot, allow the unit to cool for 15–20 minutes before pressing the reset button again.
  • Inspect wiring connections: With power OFF, check the junction box or power cord connection for loose or burned wires that could cause voltage drop and overheating.
  • Test again: After cooling and clearing, press the red reset button, restore power, and test. If the overload trips repeatedly with light use, the motor windings are likely failing and the disposal should be replaced.
