Garbage disposal makes a rattling noise as if something is loose inside, even with no food

Safety First: Turn OFF power at the switch and breaker before inspecting.

• Inspect chamber: Shine a flashlight into the disposal and look for small screws, bottle caps, or other debris. Remove with pliers.
• Check impeller lugs: Gently move each lug with a wooden spoon. Some movement is normal, but excessive wobble or a loose pin indicates wear.
• Inspect splash guard: Look for pieces of torn rubber that may have fallen into the chamber and remove them.
• Check external hardware: Under the sink, ensure that mounting screws and brackets are tight and not contacting the housing.
• Replace if internal parts are loose: If an impeller lug or pivot is loose or broken, replace the disposal.
