Possible Causes
Ungrounded metal switch box, Loose ground wire, Faulty switch leaking current to faceplate, Neutral and ground reversed
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the breaker immediately and do not touch the switch until inspected. This is a shock hazard.
- Inspect ground connections: With power OFF, remove the switch cover and verify that the ground wire is securely attached to the metal box and switch.
- Check for moisture: Look for signs of water intrusion into the box. Address any leaks from above.
- Replace suspect switch: Install a new, properly rated switch if the existing one shows signs of damage or corrosion.
- Have wiring inspected: If you are not experienced with electrical work, have a licensed electrician verify correct grounding and polarity.
