Possible Causes
Metal utensil or screw inside chamber, Broken glass pieces, Bent or broken impeller lugs, Damaged grind ring in Waste Maid grinding chamber
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and circuit breaker. Never reach into the disposal with power connected.
- Inspect with a flashlight: Look down the sink opening and identify any foreign objects such as utensils, screws, or glass.
- Remove debris safely: Use long-nose pliers or tongs to remove objects. Do not use your fingers.
- Check impeller lugs: Gently push each impeller lug with a wooden spoon handle. They should pivot freely. If a lug is stuck or visibly broken, the grinding plate assembly is damaged.
- Test with water: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn ON the unit. If the screeching persists without foreign objects present, the grind ring or bearings may be damaged.
- Replace if necessary: Waste Maid disposals are generally not serviced at the component level; replace the entire disposal if internal grinding components are damaged.
