Possible Causes
Weak or failing overload protector, Internal thermal switch not latching, Overheating due to high resistance in motor windings, Loose internal wiring at reset switch
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power at the breaker before accessing the bottom of the unit.
- Check for overheating: After brief use, feel the exterior of the disposal (carefully). If it becomes very hot quickly, the motor may be failing and tripping the overload.
- Inspect for jams or drag: Use the jam-buster wrench to ensure the motor shaft spins freely. Any drag can cause overheating and nuisance trips.
- Verify wiring: If accessible, check that the wires to the reset switch are secure and not burned.
- Replace if reset is defective: The overload protector is typically integrated and not user-replaceable on Waste Maid units. If it will not stay latched and there is no jam, replace the disposal.
