Possible Causes
Stalled motor due to jam, Prolonged operation under heavy load, Failing motor windings, Shorted internal wiring in Whirlaway motor housing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn OFF the wall switch and shut OFF the circuit breaker. Do not continue to run a smoking disposal.
- Step 1 – Allow cooling: Let the unit cool for at least 15–20 minutes. Do not touch the housing until it is cool.
- Step 2 – Clear any jam: With power OFF, use the bottom hex socket and a wooden stick from above to ensure the rotor and impellers move freely.
- Step 3 – Inspect for visible damage: Look for melted plastic, scorch marks, or a burnt smell near the bottom motor housing or wiring compartment.
- Step 4 – Reset overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the Whirlaway unit.
- Step 5 – Test briefly: Restore power and run the unit for only a few seconds with water. If the burning smell returns or the unit fails to start, the motor windings are likely damaged. Replace the disposal; internal motor repair is not recommended.
