Garbage disposal emits persistent foul odors even after running

Possible Causes

Grease and food residue on Whirlaway grind ring, Sludge buildup in discharge elbow and P-trap, Insufficient flushing with cold water, Bacterial growth in rubber splash guard

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the disposal before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners inside the unit.

  • Step 1 – Clean splash guard: Remove the rubber splash guard/baffle (if removable) and scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush. This area often traps odors.
  • Step 2 – Scrub grinding chamber: With power off, use a long-handled brush and dish soap to scrub the inside walls and underside of the splash guard.
  • Step 3 – Deodorize with ice and citrus: Restore power, fill the chamber with ice cubes and a handful of rock salt, then run the disposal with cold water for 30 seconds. Follow with small pieces of lemon or orange peel.
  • Step 4 – Flush drain line: Run hot water for several minutes to flush the P-trap and branch line.
  • Step 5 – Prevent recurrence: Avoid pouring grease or oil into the disposal and always run water for 15–30 seconds after grinding to clear residue.
