Possible Causes

Foreign object jammed between impellers and grind ring, Seized motor shaft, Bent swivel impeller, Worn motor bearings in Whirlaway grinding chamber

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and shut OFF the circuit breaker. Never put your hand into the disposal while it is connected to power.

  • Step 1 – Use the hex (Allen) wrench: Many Whirlaway units have a hex socket in the center of the bottom. Insert a 1/4" Allen wrench and rotate back and forth to free the jammed rotor.
  • Step 2 – Use a wooden tool from above: From the sink opening, insert a wooden spoon or broom handle and push against the swivel impellers to rotate the turntable. Work it back and forth until it moves freely.
  • Step 3 – Remove foreign objects: With power still OFF, use tongs or pliers to remove any metal, glass, bones, or other debris from the grinding chamber. Do not use your fingers.
  • Step 4 – Reset the overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the Whirlaway disposal.
  • Step 5 – Test operation: Restore power at the breaker, run cold water, and briefly turn on the switch. If the unit still only hums, the motor windings or bearings may be damaged and replacement of the disposal is recommended.
