Possible Causes
Deteriorated sink flange gasket, Loose Whirlaway mounting assembly, Insufficient plumber's putty under sink flange, Cracked sink flange
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and unplug the disposal if it has a cord. Do not work under a unit that could fall.
- Step 1 – Inspect the sink flange: From above the sink, look for water seeping around the sink flange when you run water.
- Step 2 – Check mounting ring tightness: Under the sink, locate the Whirlaway mounting ring. Use a screwdriver or wrench to ensure the three mounting lugs are evenly tightened.
- Step 3 – Reseal the flange if needed: If tightening does not stop the leak, support the disposal from below, rotate the mounting ring to release the unit, and remove it. Loosen the flange and clean off old plumber's putty or gasket material.
- Step 4 – Apply new seal: Roll a bead of plumber's putty around the underside of the sink flange (or install a new rubber flange gasket if your model uses one). Reinsert the flange into the sink opening and tighten the upper mounting hardware evenly.
- Step 5 – Reinstall the disposal: Reattach the Whirlaway unit to the mounting ring, lock it into place, reconnect plumbing, and test for leaks with water running before restoring power.
