Possible Causes
Internal component short in Whirlaway motor, Overload protector failure, Foreign object causing sudden lock and electrical fault, Capacitor failure (if equipped)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and shut OFF the breaker immediately. Do not attempt to restart the unit.
- Step 1 – Inspect for burning: Smell near the disposal and check for smoke or scorch marks on the housing or wiring compartment.
- Step 2 – Check reset button: After cooling, press the red reset button. If it will not stay in or trips immediately, the internal fault remains.
- Step 3 – Verify no jam: With power off, ensure the rotor can turn using the bottom hex socket. Remove any foreign objects from the chamber.
- Step 4 – Do not disassemble motor: Internal motor repairs are not recommended for Whirlaway disposals.
- Step 5 – Replace unit: Remove and replace the disposal. If the breaker also tripped and will not reset, consult an electrician to inspect the circuit.
