Whirlaway
Intermittent Jam / Loose Debris
Garbage disposal runs but occasionally locks up and then frees itself with a loud clunk

Possible Causes
Small hard object intermittently wedging in grind ring, Loose screw or metal fragment in Whirlaway chamber, Partially broken impeller catching on shredder ring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker before attempting to clear the chamber.
- Step 1 – Inspect chamber thoroughly: Use a flashlight and tongs to search for small metal pieces, screws, or bone fragments.
- Step 2 – Rotate manually: Use the bottom hex socket and a wooden stick from above to rotate the turntable several full revolutions, dislodging hidden debris.
- Step 3 – Flush with water: Restore power and run the disposal with plenty of water for 30–60 seconds to flush out loosened debris.
- Step 4 – Monitor operation: If the clunking and locking stop, the issue was likely debris. If it continues, an impeller or grind ring may be damaged.
- Step 5 – Replace if persistent: For ongoing intermittent lockups, replace the disposal to avoid sudden failure.
