Possible Causes

Clogged discharge elbow on Whirlaway outlet, Blocked P-trap, Clogged branch drain line, Excessive food sludge in drain piping

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the disposal and shut OFF power at the breaker before disassembling any plumbing.

  • Step 1 – Check for simple blockage: Run the disposal with cold water for 30–60 seconds. If water still backs up, turn power off.
  • Step 2 – Remove discharge elbow: Place a bucket under the disposal outlet. Loosen the slip nut on the discharge elbow connected to the Whirlaway outlet and remove the elbow.
  • Step 3 – Clear elbow and P-trap: Inspect and clean the elbow and P-trap of any food sludge or debris. Use a small brush or bottle brush if needed.
  • Step 4 – Check branch drain: If the P-trap is clear, the clog may be further in the wall. Use a drain snake to clear the branch line, or contact a plumber if you are not comfortable doing this.
  • Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the P-trap and discharge elbow, tighten all slip nuts, restore power, and run water while operating the disposal to confirm proper drainage.
