Loose or Misaligned Discharge Elbow / Gasket Failure
Garbage disposal runs but water leaks from discharge elbow connection
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Loose slip nut on discharge elbow, Missing or damaged rubber gasket at Whirlaway outlet, Misaligned drain piping putting stress on elbow, Cracked discharge elbow
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and do not operate the disposal while the leak is present.
- Step 1 – Tighten slip nut: Place a towel or bucket under the outlet and tighten the slip nut connecting the discharge elbow to the disposal outlet.
- Step 2 – Inspect gasket: If tightening does not stop the leak, disassemble the connection and inspect the rubber gasket or fiber washer. Replace if cracked or flattened.
- Step 3 – Check alignment: Ensure the drain pipes line up naturally with the disposal outlet without forcing. Adjust pipe lengths or fittings as needed.
- Step 4 – Replace elbow if cracked: Install a new discharge elbow if the existing one is damaged.
- Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Reconnect all parts, tighten by hand then snug with pliers, and test with water running before restoring power.
