Possible Causes
Failed lower housing gasket on Whirlaway, Corrosion around reset button opening, Crack in lower motor housing, Internal water intrusion from upper seal failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and place a container under the unit to catch drips.
- Step 1 – Confirm leak location: Dry the bottom of the disposal and run water without operating the unit. If water appears around the reset button or lower housing seam, the internal seal is compromised.
- Step 2 – Check external fittings: Ensure the leak is not originating from the discharge elbow or sink flange and running down the housing.
- Step 3 – Do not attempt seal replacement: The lower housing seal is not user-serviceable on Whirlaway disposals.
- Step 4 – Replace disposal: Remove the leaking unit and install a new disposal to prevent electrical hazards.
- Step 5 – Inspect for corrosion damage: Check nearby cabinetry and wiring for water damage and repair as needed.
