Possible Causes
Worn switch contacts, Loose wire connection at switch, Underrated switch for Whirlaway motor load, Moisture intrusion into switch box
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the circuit breaker before removing the switch cover. Do not touch a sparking switch while energized.
- Step 1 – Remove cover plate: With power off, remove the switch cover and inspect the switch body and wiring.
- Step 2 – Tighten connections: Ensure all terminal screws are tight and that wires are properly secured under the screws or in backwire clamps.
- Step 3 – Replace switch: If there is any sign of burning, melting, or if the switch buzzes when operating, replace it with a new single-pole switch rated for at least 15A (or 20A if required by circuit).
- Step 4 – Seal against moisture: If the switch is near a sink, consider using a gasketed cover and ensure the box is not exposed to splashing water.
- Step 5 – Restore power and test: Turn the breaker back on and test the disposal. The switch should operate quietly without buzzing or sparking.
