Possible Causes
Overloading the grinding chamber with food waste, Dull or worn shredder ring and impellers causing strain, Partial jam in Whirlaway grinding chamber, Failing motor windings drawing excessive current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the switch and disconnect power at the breaker before inspecting the unit.
- Step 1 – Clear the chamber: Remove any large or fibrous items (corn husks, celery, bones) using tongs. Ensure the grind ring and swivel impellers can move freely.
- Step 2 – Free the rotor: Use the bottom hex socket with an Allen wrench to rotate the motor shaft back and forth until it spins smoothly.
- Step 3 – Reset and test lightly: Press the red reset button. Restore power, run cold water, and test with a small amount of soft food waste. Avoid stuffing the chamber full.
- Step 4 – Change usage habits: Feed waste gradually with plenty of cold water. Avoid fibrous materials, large bones, and non-food items.
- Step 5 – Evaluate wear: If the unit still trips under light load, the motor or overload protector is likely failing. On most Whirlaway models, the motor is not serviceable and the entire disposal should be replaced.
