Possible Causes
Stuck or welded switch contacts, Miswired switch loop, Shorted wiring in junction box, Defective air switch (if used with Whirlaway)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn OFF the circuit breaker feeding the disposal. Do not rely on the wall switch alone.
- Step 1 – Verify switch operation: With power off, remove the switch cover plate and inspect the disposal switch for signs of burning or melting.
- Step 2 – Check wiring connections: Ensure hot and load wires are correctly connected and that no bare wires are touching.
- Step 3 – Replace faulty switch: If the switch feels loose, sticks, or shows damage, replace it with a new single-pole switch rated for the disposal’s amperage.
- Step 4 – Inspect air switch (if installed): For sink-mounted air switches, check the air tubing for kinks and ensure the air switch module is not stuck. Replace if defective.
- Step 5 – Restore power and test: Turn the breaker back on and test the disposal. If it still runs without the switch, disconnect the unit and consult an electrician, as there may be a wiring fault in the circuit.
