Possible Causes
Tripped internal overload reset button, Tripped circuit breaker, Faulty wall switch, Loose or burned wiring at Whirlaway power leads
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the circuit breaker feeding the disposal and verify power is off at the sink switch before touching any wiring.
- Step 1 – Check the wall outlet or hardwire feed: If the Whirlaway disposal is corded, unplug it and test the outlet with a lamp or tester. If hardwired, verify the breaker in the service panel is ON and not tripped.
- Step 2 – Reset the disposal: Locate the red reset (overload) button on the bottom of the Whirlaway unit. Press it firmly until it clicks. Restore power and test the switch.
- Step 3 – Inspect the wall switch: With power OFF at the breaker, remove the switch cover and check for loose wires or burned terminals. Tighten or replace the switch if it is damaged.
- Step 4 – Check wiring at the disposal: Remove the small electrical cover plate on the bottom/side of the Whirlaway. Confirm wire nuts are tight and no wires are burned. Re-secure the cover before restoring power.
- Step 5 – Test again: Turn the breaker back on and flip the switch. If there is still no response and power to the unit is confirmed, the internal motor or control may be failed and the disposal usually needs replacement.
