Possible Causes
Impeller jammed by foreign object, Grinding chamber packed with fibrous food, Motor rotor seized, Worn or stiff motor bearings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the wall switch, unplug the disposal from the outlet, and if hardwired, switch off the circuit breaker. Never put your hand into the disposal while it is connected to power.
- Check for a jam: Shine a flashlight into the disposal from the sink opening. Look for bones, utensils, fruit pits, or fibrous material wrapped around the impellers.
- Manually free the impeller: Insert a proper disposal wrench or 1/4" hex key into the bottom hex socket of the Whirlpool motor (center of the base). Rotate the wrench back and forth until the impeller turns freely 360°.
- Clear debris: Use tongs or pliers from the top to remove any visible objects. Do not use your fingers.
- Reset the unit: Press the red reset/overload button on the bottom of the Whirlpool disposal until it clicks. Restore power and test briefly with cold water running.
- If E1 returns immediately: The motor windings or bearings may be damaged. Disconnect power and consider replacing the motor/disposal assembly.
