Possible Causes
Extended continuous run time, Motor cooling passages clogged with debris, Overloaded with heavy grinding material, Failing thermal overload protector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the switch and unplug the disposal or turn off the breaker.
- Allow cooling: Let the disposal sit powered off for at least 20–30 minutes to allow the internal thermal overload to reset.
- Inspect for overload: Check the grinding chamber for large quantities of hard items (bones, ice, fruit pits). Remove excess material with tongs.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the underside of the Whirlpool disposal is not packed with insulation or items that block airflow around the motor housing.
- Reset: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Restore power and test with a small amount of soft food waste and plenty of cold water.
- If E2 recurs quickly: The motor windings or thermal protector may be failing. Replacement of the disposal assembly is typically required.
