Possible Causes
Loose power cord connection at disposal, Loose wire nut in junction box, Tripped GFCI outlet, Undervoltage from branch circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the wall switch and the circuit breaker before touching any wiring.
- Check outlet or junction box: If your Whirlpool disposal uses a plug, unplug it and test the outlet with a known-good appliance or a voltage tester. If hardwired, remove the junction box cover and visually inspect for loose or burned connections.
- Reset GFCI: If the disposal is plugged into a GFCI outlet, press the RESET button on the outlet. Then test the disposal again.
- Inspect power cord: Check the Whirlpool power cord kit (if used) for cuts, burns, or loose strain relief at the base of the disposal. Tighten the cord clamp and terminal screws inside the wiring compartment if needed.
- Restore power and test: After tightening connections, restore the breaker and test the disposal. If E3 persists and voltage at the unit is correct, the control electronics may be faulty.
