Possible Causes
Failed relay on electronic control board, Moisture intrusion into control housing, Burned PCB trace, Loose control harness connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the breaker and unplug the disposal if possible.
- Inspect control module: Locate the Whirlpool electronic control box (usually mounted under the sink or integrated at the base). Check for signs of moisture, corrosion, or burn marks.
- Check harness connections: Reseat the low-voltage harness connectors between the sink-top switch module and the control box, and between the control box and the disposal motor.
- Dry moisture: If you see condensation or water, dry the area thoroughly and correct any leaks from the sink flange or plumbing before re-energizing.
- Test operation: Restore power and test. If E4 returns, the control board is likely defective and should be replaced with the correct Whirlpool control module.
