Possible Causes
Impeller partially jammed, Motor capacitor weak, Motor rotor dragging on stator, Excessive load from foreign object
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the switch, unplug the unit, and shut off the breaker.
- Check for partial jam: Use a disposal wrench in the bottom hex socket to rotate the motor shaft. It should turn smoothly. If it binds, continue working it back and forth until free.
- Remove obstructions: From the top, use tongs to remove any foreign objects or large food pieces.
- Test with light load: Restore power and run the disposal with only water for a few seconds, then with a small amount of soft food. If it stalls again, the start/run capacitor or motor may be failing.
- Capacitor check: If you are qualified, discharge and test the motor capacitor located in the external housing on some Whirlpool models. Replace with an OEM Whirlpool capacitor if out of spec.
