Possible Causes
Severely jammed impeller, Failed start capacitor, Open start winding in motor, Debris wedged between shredder ring and impeller
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn off the switch to avoid burning out the motor. Unplug the unit and shut off the breaker.
- Free the rotor: Insert a disposal wrench or 1/4" hex key into the bottom hex socket and work the shaft back and forth until it spins freely.
- Remove jammed debris: From the top, use pliers to remove any metal, glass, or hard objects. Do not use your hands.
- Reset overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the Whirlpool disposal.
- Test: Restore power and test. If the unit still only hums and trips, the start capacitor or motor windings are likely defective and the disposal should be replaced.
