Possible Causes
Worn internal shaft seal, Cracked lower housing, Corroded grinding chamber, Failed internal gasket
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and unplug the disposal. Place a pan or towel under the unit to catch drips.
- Confirm leak source: Run water into the sink without operating the disposal and observe the bottom of the unit. If water drips from the motor housing or reset button area, the internal seal is compromised.
- Check external joints: Verify the leak is not from the discharge elbow or dishwasher inlet by drying those areas and rechecking.
- Do not attempt internal seal repair: Whirlpool disposals are generally not serviceable internally. An internal leak indicates the disposal assembly should be replaced.
- Replace unit: Disconnect plumbing and wiring per the installation manual and install a new Whirlpool disposal with fresh gaskets and plumber's putty at the sink flange.
