Possible Causes
Foreign object lodged in grinding chamber, Fibrous food wrapped around impellers, Rust buildup on shredder ring, Bent impeller plate
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the wall switch, unplug the disposal, and shut off the circuit breaker. Never work on the disposal while it is energized.
- Check reset button: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the Whirlpool disposal. If it clicks, it had tripped.
- Manually rotate: Insert a disposal wrench or 1/4" hex key into the hex socket on the bottom of the motor. Rotate back and forth until it moves freely.
- Remove obstruction: Shine a flashlight into the drain and use tongs or pliers to remove any visible objects (utensils, bones, glass). Do not insert your hand.
- Test operation: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn on the disposal. If it still only hums, the motor windings may be damaged and the unit should be replaced.
