How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the GFCI breaker before touching the pump or wiring.
- Listen for sounds: When briefly powered, a humming sound without rotation suggests a seized motor or bad capacitor.
- Check for obstructions: With power OFF, remove pump unions and inspect for stones or debris lodged at the impeller inlet.
- Try to spin shaft: Access the rear of the motor and attempt to rotate the shaft with a screwdriver. If it is stiff or frozen, the pump likely needs replacement.
- Capacitor replacement (advanced): A technician can test and replace the start/run capacitor if the motor is free but will not start.
Do not continue to power a humming pump; it can overheat and trip the breaker.
