Possible Causes
Failed high-limit sensor, Loose sensor on heater tube causing poor contact, Damaged sensor wiring harness, Corroded connector at control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Shut off power at the GFCI breaker before working on sensors or the control pack.
- Identify the secondary sensor: Typically mounted on the heater tube alongside the primary sensor, often labeled as high-limit or sensor 2.
- Check mounting and contact: Ensure the sensor is firmly clamped or threaded into the heater tube and making good thermal contact. A loose sensor can misread temperature.
- Inspect wiring: Trace the sensor cable back to the control board. Look for damage, kinks, or signs of overheating. Reseat the connector.
- Test and replace: If you have a multimeter, measure resistance and compare to expected values. Replace the sensor if readings are out of range or intermittent when the cable is flexed.
If a new sensor does not clear SN2, the control board’s sensor input circuit may be defective and will require board replacement.
