Possible Causes

Heater energized without water, Severe airlock, Closed valves around heater, Failed circulation pump not moving water through heater

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn OFF power at the GFCI breaker immediately. A dry heater can overheat and become a fire hazard.

  • Inspect water level and leaks: Confirm the spa is full and check the equipment bay for leaks around the heater and pump unions. Repair any leaks before proceeding.
  • Open all valves: Ensure all slice valves near the heater and pumps are fully open.
  • Bleed the heater: Loosen the unions on both ends of the heater tube until water flows steadily, then retighten. This ensures the heater is completely full of water.
  • Check circulation pump operation: After restoring power, verify that the circulation pump runs continuously during heating. If it does not start, hums, or stops quickly, it may need replacement.
  • Reset error: Power cycle the spa after correcting flow issues. Monitor closely during the first heat cycle to ensure the heater does not run without flow.

If drY returns or if the heater shows signs of deformation, scorching, or leaks, replace the entire heater assembly and have a Bullfrog technician inspect the control pack.
