Possible Causes
Seized pump bearings, Debris jammed in impeller, Failed start capacitor (for single-speed pumps), Low supply voltage to pump
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power at the GFCI breaker before touching the pump or wiring.
- Listen for sounds: When you previously tried to start the pump, note whether you heard a click, hum, or nothing. A hum often indicates a seized motor or bad capacitor.
- Spin shaft test: With power OFF, access the rear of the pump motor and try to rotate the shaft with a screwdriver or by hand. If it is stiff or frozen, the motor is likely seized.
- Inspect impeller: Remove the pump wet end (volute) and check for debris in the impeller. Clear any obstructions and reassemble with a new shaft seal if needed.
- Check capacitor (if equipped): Some pumps have an external start capacitor. Inspect it for bulging or leakage. Test with a capacitance meter and replace if out of spec.
- Replace pump if necessary: If the motor remains seized or fails to start with a known-good capacitor, replace the entire pump assembly with a Bullfrog-approved unit.
