Bullfrog Spas
Biofilm and Organic Contamination in Plumbing
Spa water has a strong musty or moldy odor even after adding sanitizer
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Inadequate sanitizer levels over time, Biofilm buildup in Bullfrog plumbing and JetPaks, Dirty filters harboring bacteria, Low water turnover due to short filtration cycles
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Wear gloves and eye protection when handling spa chemicals. Ensure good ventilation.
- Shock the spa: Add a high dose of chlorine or non-chlorine shock according to Bullfrog's water care guidelines. Run all pumps and open all JetPaks to circulate.
- Use a plumbing cleaner: Add a spa system flush product designed to remove biofilm. Run pumps and let it circulate per product instructions.
- Clean or replace filters: Remove filters and soak them in a filter cleaner solution, then rinse thoroughly. Replace if they are more than 1–2 years old.
- Drain and refill: After circulating the cleaner, drain the spa completely, wipe down the shell and JetPaks, then refill with fresh water.
- Balance and sanitize: Adjust pH and alkalinity, then bring sanitizer to the recommended level and maintain it consistently.
