Possible Causes

Localized overheating at heater, Poor water flow due to dirty filter, Air pocket at heater, Failing circulation pump

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker if you smell burning or see steam from the equipment bay.

  • Clean filter: Remove and thoroughly rinse the Clearwater Spas filter cartridge. Try running the spa briefly without the filter to see if HL stops occurring.
  • Check water level: Ensure water is at the proper level to maintain consistent flow.
  • Bleed air: Loosen pump unions slightly to release trapped air, then retighten.
  • Observe circulation: With power restored, verify that water is moving strongly from the heater return. Weak flow suggests a failing circulation pump.

If HL continues to trip, have a technician test the circulation pump amperage and heater temperature rise.
