Possible Causes
Loose heater or pump terminal causing arcing, Failing pump motor overheating, Control board component failure, Melted connector on heater or pump
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn off power at the GFCI breaker if you smell burning or see smoke. Do not continue to operate the spa.
Inspection:
- Open equipment bay: After allowing components to cool, remove the access panel and visually inspect the control pack, heater, and pumps.
- Look for damage: Identify any burnt wires, discolored terminals, or melted plastic connectors. Do not touch damaged components until power is confirmed off.
- Tighten or replace terminals: Loose heater or pump terminals should be cleaned and tightened. Severely damaged terminals or connectors require replacement of the affected harness or component.
- Replace failing components: A pump that is extremely hot to the touch or smells burnt likely needs replacement. A control board with burnt spots should be replaced as a complete control pack.
- Do not ignore: Operating the spa with overheating components is a fire risk. If unsure, contact a spa technician.
