Possible Causes
Momentary overheat at heater, Restricted flow through heater, Air pocket around high-limit sensor, Weak circulation pump
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power if the spa is very hot or if you smell overheated plastic.
- Check water temperature: Use an external thermometer to verify actual water temperature. If normal, the HL may be due to localized heater overheating.
- Clean filters and check flow: Remove and clean filters, then verify strong flow from the circulation outlet and heater return.
- Bleed air: Loosen unions at the heater and circulation pump to release trapped air, then retighten.
- Monitor operation: Restore power and watch for repeated HL trips. If frequent, the circulation pump or high-limit sensor may need replacement.
