Possible Causes
Failed start capacitor on pump motor, Debris jammed in pump impeller, Worn motor bearings, Low supply voltage to pump
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and lock out the breaker before working on the pump.
- Check for obstructions: Close slice valves, remove pump unions, and inspect the impeller area for debris (stones, plastic, etc.). Remove any blockage.
- Spin shaft by hand: With the back cover removed from the motor, try to rotate the shaft. If it is stiff or frozen, the motor may need replacement.
- Replace start capacitor: If the shaft spins freely but the pump only hums, the start capacitor (mounted on the motor) may be bad. Replace it with the same µF and voltage rating.
If the breaker continues to trip after these steps, the pump motor may be shorted and should be replaced.
