Possible Causes
Blocked or dirty filter restricting flow, Air lock causing no flow through heater, Failed or misreading high-limit temperature sensor, Stuck heater relay on spa control pack
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the GFCI breaker. Do not use the spa until the cause of overheating is resolved.
- Remove spa cover and let it cool: Allow the water to cool down naturally with the cover off. Do not add cold water rapidly to extremely hot water as it can stress the shell.
- Check water level and filter: Verify proper water level. Remove and thoroughly clean the Lifesmart filter cartridge. Run the spa briefly without the filter once cooled to see if the OH code clears.
- Bleed air from plumbing: If the spa was recently drained/refilled, loosen a union at the heater or circulation pump to release trapped air, then retighten.
- Inspect circulation: With power restored and water cooled, confirm that water is moving strongly through the heater return when the pump runs. Weak flow can cause localized overheating.
- Check temperature sensors: Locate the heater tube on the Lifesmart control pack. Inspect the high-limit and temperature sensors (usually threaded or clip-on probes). Ensure they are firmly seated and not corroded. A faulty high-limit sensor can falsely trip OH.
- If OH returns quickly: Turn power off and contact a technician. The heater relay on the control board may be stuck on, or the heater element may be shorted, both of which require professional service.
