Possible Causes
Worn motor bearings, Water intrusion into motor, Misaligned pump mounting, Debris in pump wet end
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker before touching the pump.
- Locate noise source: Remove the equipment bay panel and run the spa briefly to identify which pump is noisy (Pump 1, Pump 2, or circulation pump).
- Check for debris: With power OFF, remove the pump wet end faceplate (if accessible) and inspect the impeller for debris. Clear any obstructions.
- Assess motor condition: If the noise is clearly from the motor and not the wet end, the bearings are likely failing.
- Replace pump or motor: For most Michael Phelps Spas, replacing the entire pump assembly with an OEM-compatible unit is the most practical solution. Shut power OFF, close slice valves, disconnect unions and wiring, swap the pump, then reopen valves and bleed air.
