Possible Causes
Air lock after refill, Seized pump bearings, Debris jammed in impeller, Failed start capacitor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the GFCI breaker before attempting to free a pump or open unions.
- Step 1 – Check for air lock: If the issue started after refilling, loosen the pump unions slightly to release trapped air until water appears, then retighten.
- Step 2 – Try restarting: Restore power and briefly run the pump. If it still only hums, turn power off again.
- Step 3 – Spin shaft by hand: Remove the rear motor cover and attempt to rotate the shaft with a screwdriver or by hand. If it is stuck, the motor may be seized.
- Step 4 – Inspect impeller: Remove the pump wet end and check for debris or broken parts jamming the impeller.
- Step 5 – Replace capacitor or pump: If the shaft spins freely but the motor only hums, the start capacitor may be bad and can be replaced. If bearings are noisy or the motor is seized, replace the entire pump assembly.
