Possible Causes

Heater overheated due to lack of water, Persistent air lock in plumbing, Severely restricted flow from clogged filter, Burned-out heater element in Tuff Spas heater tube

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and allow the heater to cool completely before working on it.

  • Step 1 – Resolve underlying dr issue: Follow the steps for the dr error (fill water, bleed air, clean filter, verify pump operation).
  • Step 2 – Inspect heater tube: Look for discoloration, bulging, or melted plastic around the heater manifold—signs of dry-fire damage.
  • Step 3 – Reset system: After correcting flow issues and allowing the heater to cool, turn the breaker off for 1–2 minutes, then back on to clear the dY lockout.
  • Step 4 – Test heating: Set the temperature a few degrees above current water temperature and monitor for normal heating without new errors.

If dY returns immediately or the spa does not heat, the heater assembly may be damaged and should be replaced with a compatible Tuff Spas heater unit.
