Possible Causes
Seized pump shaft on Tuff Spas jet pump, Failed start capacitor, Debris jammed in impeller, Worn pump motor bearings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the breaker before working on the pump. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker.
- Step 1 – Access pump: Remove the equipment compartment panel to expose the jet pump.
- Step 2 – Check for obstructions: Close slice valves, loosen pump unions, and inspect the impeller area for debris (stones, plastic, etc.).
- Step 3 – Manually spin shaft: With power off, try to rotate the pump shaft or impeller by hand. If it is stuck, the pump may be seized.
- Step 4 – Inspect capacitor: Many Tuff Spas pumps have an external start capacitor under a metal or plastic cover. A bulged or leaking capacitor should be replaced with the same rating.
If the pump still only hums or trips the breaker, the motor is likely failed and the entire pump assembly should be replaced.
