Microbial Growth in Water System and Coils
Dehumidifier emits a musty or moldy smell from the air outlet
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Dirty evaporator coil, Stagnant water in tank, Contaminated air filter, Poor drainage leaving standing water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Wear gloves and, if sensitive, a mask when cleaning moldy components.
- Clean water tank: Remove the water tank, wash with warm soapy water, and disinfect with a mild bleach solution (rinse thoroughly afterward).
- Clean air filter: Wash or replace the air filter according to the manual.
- Clean evaporator and condenser: Use a coil-safe cleaner suitable for dehumidifiers. Spray the evaporator and allow it to drain into the tank. Do not soak electrical parts.
- Improve drainage: Ensure the drain channel is clear so water does not stagnate inside the unit.
- Run on fan-only (if available): After cleaning, run the fan for 30–60 minutes to help dry internal components.
