Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dehumidifier. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system; that requires EPA-certified service.
- Step 1 – Check airflow: Inspect the air intake and exhaust grilles. Clean any dust buildup on the filter and coils with a soft brush or vacuum. Ensure the unit is at least 12 inches from walls or furniture.
- Step 2 – Ambient temperature: Verify the room temperature is within the operating range (typically 41–95°F / 5–35°C). Very high temperatures can cause overpressure and trigger protection.
- Step 3 – Power reset: Unplug the unit for 15–20 minutes to allow the compressor to cool and the control board to reset. Plug back in and test.
- Step 4 – Listen for compressor: If the fan runs but the compressor hums briefly and clicks off, the overload protector may be tripping due to high current or internal compressor fault.
- Step 5 – Inspect overload and wiring (advanced): Remove the rear panel to access the compressor terminal cover. Check that the overload protector and start device are firmly attached and that wires are not burnt or loose. Replace the overload/start device if visibly damaged or burnt.
- Step 6 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall panels, plug in, and run the unit. If E4 returns quickly, discontinue use.
Persistent E4 often indicates a sealed system or compressor problem. Contact an authorized AIRCARE service provider; do not attempt to open refrigerant lines yourself.
