Possible Causes
Dirty air filter, Mold growth on evaporator coil, Stagnant water in drain pan, Contaminated water bucket
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning. Wear gloves and, if sensitive, a mask when dealing with mold.
Steps to remove odors:
- 1. Clean the filter: Wash the air filter with mild detergent and dry completely.
- 2. Clean the bucket: Wash the water bucket with hot soapy water and a small amount of bleach. Rinse thoroughly.
- 3. Access coils and drain pan: Remove the front/rear cover to expose the evaporator and drain pan. Spray with a non-rinse coil cleaner or a mild disinfectant safe for aluminum.
- 4. Clean drain pan: Wipe out slime and debris from the pan. Ensure the drain hole is clear.
- 5. Dry and reassemble: Allow components to dry before reassembly. Run the unit on fan-only mode for a while to help dry internal surfaces.
