Possible Causes
Open or shorted evaporator NTC sensor, Sensor dislodged from evaporator coil, Damaged sensor harness, Failed main PCB sensor input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Disconnect the appliance from power before opening any panels. Sharp metal edges around the coil can cause injury; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Steps to address E2 (evaporator sensor):
- 1. Reset the unit: Unplug for 5–10 minutes, then reconnect. If E2 reappears immediately, proceed with inspection.
- 2. Access the evaporator: Remove the front or rear cover (depending on model) to expose the evaporator coil (the cold finned coil behind the air filter).
- 3. Locate the evaporator NTC sensor: It is usually clipped or strapped to the evaporator tubing or fins, with two wires leading back to the main PCB.
- 4. Check sensor placement: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the coil. If it has fallen off, reattach it using the original clip or a metal clip/thermal tape rated for refrigeration use.
- 5. Inspect wiring: Look for chafed insulation, broken wires, or loose connectors. Reseat the connector on the main PCB.
- 6. Test the sensor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at room temperature. Compare to the ambient sensor if they are the same part number; they should be similar. An open or shorted reading indicates a bad sensor.
- 7. Replace if defective: Install a new Ariston evaporator NTC sensor, route the harness away from the fan and sharp edges, and secure it to the coil in the same position.
- 8. If sensor and wiring are OK: The main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly. In that case, replacement of the main control board is usually required and is best done by a technician.
