Dehumidifier shows E5 and will not start or stops shortly after starting

Safety: Unplug the unit and wait several minutes before accessing internal components. Capacitors on the control board may hold charge.

Steps to troubleshoot E5:

• 1. Verify power supply: Plug the dehumidifier directly into a wall outlet (no extension cords). Ensure the outlet provides the correct voltage and is not shared with heavy loads.
• 2. Listen for compressor start attempts: When powered on, you may hear a click from the relay/PTC and a brief hum from the compressor before E5 appears. Repeated clicking without running suggests a start component issue.
• 3. Access the compressor compartment: Remove the rear or side panel to expose the compressor and its start components (relay/PTC and overload protector).
• 4. Inspect the PTC/relay: Disconnect power. Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the PTC/relay for burn marks, cracks, or melted plastic. If damaged, replace with the correct Ariston compressor start relay/PTC specified for your model.
• 5. Check wiring: Ensure all spade connectors are tight on the compressor terminals and overload protector.
• 6. Advanced testing (optional): With a multimeter, measure compressor winding resistances. Very low or zero resistance between any two pins may indicate a shorted compressor, which typically requires full compressor replacement.
• 7. If start components are good: The main control board’s power stage (relay or triac) may be faulty. Replacement of the main control board is recommended and should be done by a professional.
